As mentioned in the previous post, here is the page where you can opt out of Google's advertising cookies. Here is a link to the web browser plug-in to more permanently opt-out. It also appears that on at least some browsers, (like Safari), you can stop at least most cookies like this by blocking third party cookies, in a preference menu of the browser.
An advertising privacy policy includes Google's explanation of what it uses cookies for, under the heading "How does Google use cookies to serve ads?"
